The Egg, by Arne Jacobsen

Since starting in upholstery, Simion has always been drawn to this chair.

Designed in 1958, Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Egg chair has been featured in classic movies, photos and popular culture since then, and is a perfect example of a timeless design.

In 1958, Jacobsen was given a blank sheet of paper and asked to design the world’s first designer hotel, the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen.

Drawing on his roots in architecture, Jacobsen was responsible for the design of the building but also the fixtures and fittings, including the chairs for guests to sit on. He was able to be incredibly free with his design process and he came up with a plan for these wonderful statement chairs.

You may have watched the short film on the homepage, featuring Simion working on a customer’s Egg chair a few months back, along with a sneak peek of what a day in the Reloved Works studio looks like. Simion’s Reclaim magazine column also featured this same chair in issue 42. You can get hold of digital back copies of Reclaim Magazine on Pocket Mags if you fancy having a read.

Simion has just completed the Egg shown below for a customer who chose a beautiful blue and orange tweed from Bute fabrics, made on the remote Isle of Bute in Scotland

What’s more, he filmed each step by step process involved in restoring this fantastic chair, so you can watch the first part of this restoration below (parts 2 and 3 are here on youtube):

We’ll leave you with just a few more of the Arne Jacobsen Egg chairs Simion has been commissioned to upholster over the years. Which is your favourite?
